SCALING & POLISHING

Cleaning/ scaling of teeth is the procedure of removing plaque (soft, sticky, creamy, bacterial deposit) and calculus-stony hard deposits that have built up on the teeth surface over a period of time. In a normal course of time teeth are surrounded by saliva which contains calcium and other minerals which harden with time and form calculus if plaque is not cleaned regularly. It’s a chalky deposit that buildup over time, as lime scale forms in a pipe. Until it gets stained by other things it is usually a tooth colored and generally mistaken as part of the teeth, but it also can vary from brown to black in color as it gets stained or becomes very old.

If the calculus is allowed to accumulate over a period of time on the tooth surface it will lead to gum infection initially in form of Gingivitis, which further progresses if left untreated it goes deep and causes further destruction of surrounding tissue inclusive of bone known as periodontitis which is commonly known as Pyorrhea in common language. As this destruction process is painless, hence the patient remains unaware of the destruction occurring in his oral cavity.

Teeth cleaning/scaling also known as oral prophylaxis leaves you as fresh & teeth can be felt smooth and clean.

HOW TEETH CLEANING/ORAL PROPHYLAXIS IS DONE?

By using specialized instruments dentist gently remove these deposits without harming the teeth.

Commonly used instrument is ultrasonic scaler which uses gentle vibrations to remove calculus. It also sprays a spray of water which acts as cooling agent, while it also wash away debris and keep the area clean & at a proper temperature during the procedure. The sound of this instrument resembles the sound just like when you put a power toothbrush into your mouth.

Oral prohylaxis/ scaling is recommended every 6 months and acts as preventive tool to keep the teeth healthy. As healthy teeth are essential for overall healthy well being. It does not scratch or damage the tooth in any way as generally patients are having misconception that if they underwent scaling it will weaken your teeth but it reality it strengthen your teeth & makes you healthy. DEEP CLEANING

Within Nano seconds after brushing biofilm starts forming on the tooth surface. By regular brushing this biofilm gets disrupted. If brushing is not done in a proper way than this biofilm colonizes the bacteria & further forms plaque which if left out on tooth surface untreated forms calculus a calcified form of plaque. This plaque not only grow around the tooth surface it penetrates below the gum/gingival margin, forms the subgingival plaque. Sub gingival plaque formations destroys the surrounding tissue as this subgingival plaque further progresses into subgingival calculus and aggravates the tissue destruction and causes pockets ie pathological deepening of gingival sulcus.

In subgingival plaque and calculus bacteria gets colonize and starts irritating gums, in form of inflammation tend to bleed easily. This bleeding is noticed mainly while brushing your teeth, eating hard things, and sometimes gums bleed with a small amount of trigger also.

With the progression of destruction of periodontal tissue it destroys the surrounding bone also eventually cause loosening of teeth. The damage of the supporting structure is irreversible but this damage can be prevented if noticed on time and treated by Subgingival scaling/ Deep cleaning.

Periodontal therapy in form of deep cleaning eliminates the plaque and calculus and heals the surrounding tissue and reduces the pocket depth.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AND SCALING/CLEANING AND DEEP CLEANING?

In scaling the plaque and calculus is removed from the tooth surface above gingival margin. Whereas in deep cleaning/subgingival scaling plaque and calculus is removed below the gingival (gum) margin along the root surface even the micro roughness caused because of damage by the bacteria on the root surface (cementum) is also removed in this process (root planing) resulting in a smooth surface.
